Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 2nd model. 44-40. Excellent bright  bore. Here is an above average 2nd model 1873. Has the standard 24" round barrel. In the very sought after 44-40 caliber in which all 2nd models are chambered for. The bore is excellent. Bright and shiny all the way through with NO roughness or frosting. NO rings or bulges. Very hard to find bores this nice on any antique Winchester rifle. The mechanics are excellent as well and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. NO bulges cases or backed out primers. The head space is perfect on this gun. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. All the springs are strong and positive just the way you love to find them. The markings are all good but the S/N is weak from an old cleaning or wear. The S/N is 60591 the best I can make out. Made in 1880. NO caliber markings on the barrel or the brass carrier as is totally 100% correct for the 2nd models as 44-40 was the only caliber made at this time so Winchester did not start marking the calibers untill the 38-40 was being made. This gun is all correct as far as this goes...The metal is a plumb brown patina and shows no pitting any where. The receiver might have had some browning solution added at one time but looks very nice. The barrel and mag tube are untouched and never cleaned on or messed with. Has an original Winchester dust cover that still retracts with the lever throw. The front sight is original and the rear sight is off of a Marlin rifle with the small "legs' on both sides.  I am working on buying an 1873 3rd model parts gun with the original rear sight and I will swap them out at no charge if the deal goes through. At least this gun will have an original Winchester rear sight but it will not be the shorter 2nd model sight. The screws are all nice and not all burred up. The wood is very nice also. The forearm has a gouge on the bottom below the end cap as you can see in the photo but has no other issues and no splits or cracks and is still tight and proud to the metal. Never cleaned on or messed with. The butt stock is very nice as well and has no splits or cracks and fits tight to the metal. Never sanded on or messed with and shows honest bumps and dings. Has what looks like a small Texas star carved in at the end of the lower tang {see photo}. Just very nice wood on this ole 2nd model 73. Here is just a very nice and not messed with early 2nd model 73. It has an excellent bright bore and shoots great. These are getting very hard to find at reasonable prices any more so if you have been looking for an excellent shooter 2nd model, here it is and it won't last long. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping. Please check out my other listings while you are here.
