Description:
Cal 32-40. 30" full oct bbl fitted with scope blocks and a Stevens scope. Shooting and Fishing magazine reported that this is the prototype 44-1/2 action gun used by L.C. Ross in competition on June 7, 1902 at the St Louis Schuetzen Festival and again in November of 1902 at the Cyprus Hill Range in Rhode Island New York. It was reported as being a Stevens new action in cal 32-40 with a 220 grain bullet. Bbl is rifled with 8 lands and grooves in 14 right hand twist in comparison to the standard 1 and 16 inch twist. Gun is completely unmarked but there is very little doubt by the gun scholars that this was the so called "mystery rifle" that Ross used in those early competition matches. Gun is in superb condition retaining about 98% bright bbl blue and 95% vivid case colors. Stock is excellent with nearly all varnish. It is finely checkered with helm buttplate. Finger lever has the typical loop wooden insert and is fitted with the pope style palm rest. Accompanying the gun is a pope style 220 bullet mold, a box of lubed lead bullets, pope style lube pump and re-de capper. Very unique item in superb condition. The helm butt as well as the finger lever are nickel plated and retain all the nickel. Gun is fitted with a Stevens scope and pope style scope mounts. Excellent inside and out!
