Description:
Serial #5377, .38 Colt, 4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This 1906-made revolver retains about 85-90% of the original blue finish that is thinning and silvering on the muzzle, high edges, and projections. The original checkered hard rubber grips are numbered to the gun on the interior, and remain in fine-excellent condition with only some very minor flattening of the points. The barrel has the correct markings, but there are no markings present on the side plate due to the cut-away sections. The cuts are present on both sides of the frame to expose the trigger mechanism and an “&” is stamped under the crane on the frame indicating a return to the factory for some type of service. It is interesting to note that, despite being a cut-away, the revolver is fully shootable, and still times and locks up as well as the day it left the factory. Included with the gun is a 2015 dated Colt Factory Letter that lists the gun as produced in “Skeleton configuration”, and gives an initial shipment on the Colt loan account of May 25, 1906, to Belknap Hardware & Mfg. Co. of Louisville, KY. The gun was subsequently returned to the factory on December 21, 1906, where it remained until May 23, 1907, when it was shipped to Albert Foster Jr., Colt's New York Agency manager. There are no further factory records, indicating that the gun was either sold to an outside customer or retained by Mr. Foster for his extensive personal collection. The gun eventually found its way into the well known collection of Richard “Stretch” Kennedy, and was acquired by us during the sale of his estate. This is an extremely rare, original Colt cut-away, one of only 60 examples of the Police Positive cut-aways ever produced, and has documented ties to one of the Colt company's most important 20th century figures. It would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
