Whitney M1841 U.S. Percussion Rifle
Produced by the Eli Whitney Company of New Haven, Connecticut, commonly known as the “Mississippi Rifle.” This arm, one of just 5,000 pieces, was altered by the Colt factory in Hartford during late 1861. Lock marked E.WHITNEY/US/NHAVEN/1854. Barrel stamped US/VP/SK/STEEL. Tang dated 1854. Barrel stamped B146 near muzzle.
Stock includes brass patchbox. Brass butt plate stamped US. Colt alteration includes folding leaf rear sight, bayonet barrel ring lug and barrel rebore. Barrel metal has brown patina and light pitting. Stamping on lock is clear and legible. Stock has typical variety of scratches and dings.
