This is a very nice, blued finish Third Model revolver that has retained 80-85% of the original bright blue finish with flaking along the sides of the frame and some light cleaning at the muzzle where some mild pinprick pitting began to form. The fluted cylinder has traces of original blue but is otherwise flaked to a smooth pale gray-brown patina, and there is still bright fire blue remaining on both the trigger and barrel latch. The trigger guard and hammer retain a commensurate amount of the original color case-hardening with the balance worn to a dark pewter gray. The frame, cylinder, and barrel have matching assembly numbers: “7080”. The period ivory grips are in fine condition with a mellow cream-colored age patina that has dark hairline cracks at the butt on both panels. Some shrinking has occurred over time and there are slight gaps present at the tops of both grips. The fit and mechanics of the gun are excellent without any play or rattling, and the lock-up and timing are like new. It is very unusual to find Merwin, Hulbert & Co. revolvers in blue (It is reported that only about 5% of production was so finished), and it is even more unusual to find such a nice example. This is a great Third Model Frontier Army revolver in extremely nice, original condition. {Ref: “The Story of Merwin, Hulbert & Co.” by Art Phelps; 1992} Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Merwin Hulbert Model: Frontier Army Serial Number: 17055 Caliber Info: .44-40 Gauge Info: .44-40 |
