This is a handsome revolver that has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, and barrel with the latch being one number off (“31971”). The metal has retained 95-97% of the original blue finish with mild silvering at the muzzle and trace silvering along the high and exposed edges. The cylinder has a commensurate amount of original blue remaining, but does have a moderate turn-ring at the rear as well. The hammer and trigger guard have bright original color case-hardening remaining with the balance faded to a bright pewter gray. The checkered walnut, diamond-center grips are in excellent shape with only some very minor surface scratches on and some mild flattening of the points. The revolver has a tight, solid lock-up and the mechanism is fully functional. This is a fabulous N.M. No. 3 Target in excellent condition overall. Included with the revolver is a 2005 dated S&W factory letter that lists a shipping date of March 13, 1900, to noted S&W retailer Philip Beakert Co. of San Francisco, CA. The gun is listed as having an “8 inch barrel, adjustable rear target sight, blue finish, and checkered walnut grips”. Also included is a copy of the sale listing for the revolver written by the late Harry W. Sanford's son. Mr. Sanford was the founder of Automag, AMT, and other enterprises, and this revolver resided in his collection for many years. This is a great chance to own a rare 8” barreled New Model No. 3 Target that was owned by a well known 20th century firearms designer.
