14-137 Starr Carbine Condition: Metal clean with bluing faded and thin, on barrel, case hardening on frame is a little dark. Action works well, Bore has some rifling, sight is missing leaf, has notch. Wood is clean with some dings, dents, etc. Looks good, an attractive Star Civil War Carbine. HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
Starr Percussion Carbine. Made by Starr Arms Co., Yonkers, New York, c. 1862-65. Total quantity 20,601.
54 caliber, breechloader. Single shot, loaded by pulling down on the combination trigger guard/lever, which allows the breechblock to lower and tip backwards. 21” round barrel, fastened by single band. Brass barrel band and butt plate; iron parts blued, with casehardened lock and frame. Walnut stocks, Sling ring on left side of the breech. Serial numbered. Lock marked: STARR ARMS Co/Yonkers, N.Y> on barrel: STARR ARMS Co Yonkers, N.Y. On Breech: Starr’s Patent/Sept.14th 1858 Inspector initials on left side of butt stock
 The inventor, Ebenezer T. Starr, was a son of gunmaker Nathan Starr, Jr., and in government tests the carbine was rated as better than the Sharps. A number of the Starrs were issued for service in the West, primarily to the following Union cavalry regiments: 1st Ark., 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri and 24th N.Y.
