Description:
Griffin & Howe Custom Mauser 7x57 Rifle
1920's, ENGRAVED, GORGEOUS!

General Specs: Griffin & Howe, Year 1928, 7 x 57, 8 1/2 lbs, Rifle
Serial Number: 251

Griffin & Howe is arguably the most noteworthy custom rifle maker in America.  Created in 1923 and committed to building the best rifles for the American sportsman, G & H was a great success.  Purchased in 1930 by Abrecombie & Fitch, many famous and powerful outdoorsmen counted on G & H to build fine, custom, well decorated rifles for their needs, among them Ernest Hemingway, Clark Gable, Jack O'Connor, Gary Cooper, Robert Ruark, Dwight Eisenhower, and Bill Ruger.  You can find vintage G & H rifles that range from plain and utilitarian for around $4500 to fine works of art that surpass $30,000.  G & H still builds fine rifles today.  This rifle was No. 251, built in the mid 1920's on a Mauser action, and it is in wonderful original condition.  There are many special features on this custom rifle that have become the hallmark for G & H including  gorgeous English walnut stock with a double shadow line raised cheek panel on the left side, checkered and engraved steel butt plate with trap door, engraved by Rudolph Kornbrath with a full game scene on the floor plate, fine english scroll on the trigger guard, engraved, and stippled front bridge, engraved band at base of barrel, all screws engraved, engraved border at the base of the front sight ramp, all crisp and sharp.  There is a quarter rib with 3 folding leaf sights, a folding Lyman peep at the end of the bolt, a banded and stippled ramped front sight, and a G & H side mount single lever scope and rings, complete with a vintage and minty Alaskan 4X scope.  The 25" barrel has a mirror bore with sharp rifling and no corrosion at the throat, front sight and sling banded to the barrel, and a clean crown.  Stock is mounted with European style sling swivels and has borderless flor-de-lis checkering that is crisp and clean, wrap around on the forend, and a neat schnabel forend tip.  Bolt is bent for a low scope mount and the handle is flattened on the backside and nicely checkered, as is the trigger blade.  No pits or scratches to speak of, all in lovely condition.  What a great rifle in a most respected, soft shooting, versatile, and accurate 7 x 57 Mauser cartridge.  These guns will always maintain their value as you enjoy shooting a great American vintage classic rifle at your chosen quarry.
