This is what looks to be an original Common Rifle that was most likely missing the entire lock mechanism and looks to have been retrofitted with a Trapdoor Springfield lock that has been fitted with a flint hammer, frizzen, and flashpan, thus being sort of a a “poor mans restoration”. It looks to have the original barrel and original old 1817 stock with the original bands, the triggerbow with the rear finger “tail” and having the distinctive 1817 oval iron patchbox. If this were a totally ORIGINAL 1817 Common Rifle, it would be a $3500-$4000 gun, but even as a great decoration or “filler piece” in a modest collection, it is a real decent buy at $795.
