Description:
Wonderful large French 18th century ivory handled folding knife, fork, cork screw and silver spoon combination piece.  The ivory handles are 6-5/16 inch long by 7/8 inch wide (top to bottom).  The handles are one-piece carved ivory with three iron pins, one at each end and one in the center, each of which is set in a gold rosette.  On one end is a large 5-1/4 inch long by ¾ inch (at widest part) blade marked with what appears to be “RUAU (or possibly NUAU)/PLOT &” [next line worn off] with a fleur-de-lis just to the rear.  There is a very small piece of the end broken off as can be seen in the photos.  In the second channel at this end is a three-tyne fork 2 inches long by 5/8 inch wide and, in a third channel, a 4 inch long silver plated spoon, which is 1-3/8 inch wide (at the widest section).  The inside of the spoon is 90+% shiny silver, whilst the back side is nearly a pewter color.  It folds into a slot cut into the opposite side of the ivory handle/frame.  At the other end is a smaller knife 2-3/16 inch long which is marked “SICAULI/TOURS.”  This knife is similar to an ivory handled knife shown on page 131, "Collectible Pocket Knives," by Dominique Pascal, which was also made in Tours.  With both knives open the knife is 13-5/8 inches long.  The ends the ivory handles are slightly recessed at the bottom where the bolster flares out (about 1-3/16 inch at each end) and at the end of the recess the slightly swelled handle curves inward in a sharply tapering and diminishing carved element.  On one ivory handle there is an age crack on both sides of the center pin.  On the other handle there is an age crack at the bottom of the spoon slot and another at one end. The cracks are small and do not detract from the overall look and are in keeping with the age of this piece.  The center spring for the large knife blade is quite a bit thicker than the others and has a slight rounded projection 1-15/16 inch from the hinged end with a series of raised curves along the spine to the end.  This knife/utensil somewhat resembles the 18th century multi-blade/implement piece shown on page 131 of "Collectible Pocket Knives," by Dominique Pasccal, which is also marked "Tours."  This was a very elegant gentlemen’s or officer’s personal knife/utensil and has a wonderful, unique look. shipping $18 (insured).  I accept paypal in addition to bank checks and money orders.  Thanks for looking.
