Do you want one accurate hunting rifle that is the envy of everyone? This is it!
Manufactured by Steyr-Mannlicher, of Steyr, Austria. .270, 24” barrel, 5-shot rotary magazine, straight-style bolt handle (as opposed to the rear-angled model of 1952 and later), excellent condition of both wood and metal.
Those unfamiliar with the Mannlicher-Schoenauer are always in for pleasant surprises. For instance, this is a control-feed mechanism and one that competed with the Mauser 98 and was not a derivation of the Mauser as is most control-feed rifles. The rotary magazine (copied by Savage in their Model 99) has a push-button release that allows the floor plate to turn 90 degrees which then lets the entire magazine box and floor plate eject from the rifle. Another hidden feature is the push-button on the receiver bridge alongside the bolt. When the bolt is opened and the button is depressed, a full magazine will empty its cartridges coming up and out of the magazine defying gravity.
The original stock is English walnut, displaying nice warm color with some fiddle-back grain on the buttstock, showing from both sides. The stock was designed with the classic comb, small cheekpiece, open pistol grip with two-panel hand-cut checkering and wrap-around checkering at the forearm. Stock accouterments include the original black grooved composition buttplate, coved pistol grip cap, rear sling swivel and front side-mounted sling swivel.
Rear sight is a two-leaf affair, one standing and one folding in a saddle-mount; while front sight is a small silver bead mounted on a finely cross-hatched ramp. The narrow, smooth trigger breaks like glass at 3 lbs.
Weight is 7 lb., 7 oz. The rifle is fitted with a brand-new Carl Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 MC scope mounted in Watt’s Redfield M-S specialty steel rings.
Condition: Metal and Bluing 100%; Bore 100%; Wood 99%; Checkering 100% -- Near Mint.
The Model 1950 was the first model made after World War II and started with serial number 1. The last M-S was serial number 61154 made in 1973. This is rifle number 9861

In their book Gamefield Classics by Michael MacIntosh and Bill Headrick, the authors devote a chapter to the Mannlicher Schoenauer entitled, “Silk & Steel” and explain that since the rotary magazine allows the cartridges to be aligned with the bore (unlike the staggered arrangement of Mauser’s magazine) and because the “butter knife” bolt is centered on the bolt body, the action “feels more like silk than steel.” They state that this action is “the smoothest operating turnbolt action ever made.” The writers also point out that the bearing surfaces between the bolt and receiver, for locking the bolt, are greater on the M-S than on Mauser’s.
Special Note: I purchased this rifle originally for my collection because I had looked long and hard for a beautiful M-S that had a nicely figured stock with classic styling. The bonus turned out to be that this rifle is super accurate, and shoots a ragged hole at 100 yards with 130 Sierra or Nosler Partition bullets loaded with IMR 4350 in 55.4 grains.
