Description:
This is a distinctive, British-made projectile for the breech-loading Whitworth field gun that measures 9 1/4” in length and has a weight of 12 lbs. (5.4 Kg). According to an old painted label on the side of the bolt, it was dug at Richmond, VA. The exterior of the shell has a dark brown patina throughout with a rough texture and has both the characteristic lathe dimple at the nose and the visible machining marks at the crest of the ridges between the rifling flats. Whitworth guns were not commonly encountered during the war, but were devastatingly accurate when serviced by a well trained crew. This is a rare Civil War artillery round and is in excellent relic condition.
