Description:
Assembly #615, .44-40 (.44 WCF), 7” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very hard to find, blued example Fourth Model revolver that has retained 50-60% of the original bright blue finish with extensive flaking and gray fading along the sides of both the barrel and frame. There are some scattered specks of plum-brown freckling scattered about the surface as well. The fluted cylinder has original blue remaining within the flutes, but has also flaked to a smooth pale gray patina. The trigger guard and hammer have a mostly dark pewter gray patina with lighter gray on the buttstrap which was cleaned long ago which has expunged the original serial number as well. Nevertheless, the frame, cylinder, barrel, and both grips have matching assembly numbers: “615”. The original walnut grips (themselves a rarity on Merwin, Hulbert revolvers) are in fine condition with some scattered light handling marks and minor surface blemishes marring the otherwise fine oil finish on both panels. The fit and mechanics of the gun are excellent without any play or rattling, and the lock-up and timing are like new. The Fourth Model Army is the hardest large frame Merwin to find, and is even more difficult to find in original blue finish (only about 5% of MH&Co.'s total production was finished in blue). This is a great Fourth Model Frontier Army revolver in fine, original condition and, despite the finish loss that has occurred over time, would be difficult to upgrade from. {Ref: “The Story of Merwin, Hulbert & Co.” by Art Phelps; 1992} Antique
