Description:
Serial #857, .577 Snider, 21 1/2” barrel with a very good bore that has specks of dark freckling along its length. This is a very nice quality carbine that has an overall dark gray pewter patina with small spots of dark plum-brown freckling throughout and a series of small peen marks on the upper band and top of the B.S.A. marked breechblock. The lockplate is marked, “H. YEOMANS/LONDON” and has an overall mottled gray patina that is free of any noticeable freckling or pitting (Horace Yeomans was in operation in London from 1864 to approximately 1870). The brass trigger guard, barrel band, nosecap, and buttplate have an overall pale yellow-ochre patina while the walnut stock has an added armory finish over numerous minor handling marks and surface blemishes throughout. There is an area of moderate surface damage on the left side of the stock opposite the lock that has several scratches and small chips surrounding the left side of the breechblock (there are also some small peen marks and blemishes in the metal as well). The carbine comes with a correct metal ramrod and is equipped with both a period leather sling in fine condition and a pewter, chain-mounted firing pin protector that has lost the leather pad. This is a really nice volunteer/militia Snider carbine in very good-fine condition and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
