This is a rare carbine, one of only about 1,000 ever built, that holds the distinction of being the first bolt action metallic cartridge firearm to be accepted for US military issue. The metal has a turned to a mellow plum-brown patina over time with pinprick pitting at the muzzle, as well as on the nose of the hammer. The rear portion of the receiver has a small spot of light pitting just behind the patent markings with a series of linear impact marks in the center. The “U.S./E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR VT.” marked, 1865 dated lockplate has a mottled gray patina that carries over onto the trigger guard and the sling bar and ring. The walnut stock has an old added varnish finish with a few sparse handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered about the otherwise fine wood. There is no inspection mark or cartouche visible, although the letters “B.F.S.” are stamped into the front portion of the trigger tang. Due to the late receipt of the order, the Palmer was never used in combat. This is a truly rare cavalry carbine and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
