Very early 14XX serial number (circa 1882 manufacture). These big top-ejecting Marlins were the first serious competitors to Winchesters dynasty and caused Winchester to scramble to get John Browning to develop the Model 1886 and basically to stop promoting the Model 1876. The Burgess patented 28” barreled Marlin was clearly a superior rifle as compared to the 1876. and was also capable of using the very popular 45Govt cartridge (45/70) which was too long of a case for the ’76. Overall a thin brownish patina on smooth metal with some plumming blue on the barrel. Unusual rear barrel sight (…no doubt a period replacemet, and if objectionable, I’ll replace it with a generic buck-horn Sporting sight. Handsome and very impressive rifle! VG as described. $2450 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
