Description:
#4780 Smith & Wesson M-1881 Double Action, 4”x44SWR with very fine+ bright bore (about an 8-1/2 on a scale of 10), 17XXX serial range (c,1884). The action works fine on the double action mode, but it is not catching on the full cock when in the single action mode for some unknown reason. It does have a good hammer notch, so I think it is likely due to a missing trigger sear spring or the sear itself, as nothing appears visually (to me, at least) to be broken inside the sideplate. This caliber can be easily loaded for by using modern 44S&W Special or 44S&W Magnum cases and simply trimming them down to the shorter Russian length. The exterior retains about 90%+ factory nickel which has the remaining 10% flaking and peeling to grey-brown bare metal, 70% fading blue on the trigger guard and faint traces of casehardening on the hammer. Excellent grips have no chips, slivers, or cracks, however the right side grip is sun-faded to a brownish color. These 1881s were sturdy well-built guns and the “Outlaw Queen”, Belle Starr carried one …as did the infamous Texas gunslinger, John Westley Hardin, who also had a nickel S&W 1881 on him when he was gunned down in a Texas saloon in 1895. Being as gunfighters highly favored “short-barreled” guns because of their quick ease of use, it is a high probability that Hardins gun was exactly like this revolver. A very, very decent Model 1881. About Ex.Fine++ as described. $1495
