Description:

#4987 Colt S/A 7-1/2”x45COLT, “U.S. Cavalry”, 50XXX(1879) and Henry Nettleton inspected. G/VG bore that looks like with some good scrubbing that it should clean to VG+ or better, fine action with all “clicks” on the hammer. Smooth even dark brown patina, wood grips with considerable wear and not a trace of a cartouche remaining on either side. The “U.S” on the frame is also faint and appears to be an attempted removal, which was VERY common on stolen firearms when the soldiers deserted ...or by Indians who captured the weapons after a skirmish. As with many (if not most) Cavalry issued Single Actions, they have been “juiced up” over the years when they became so highly collected….and while I cannot pin down anything definitive on THIS gun (aside of the ejector head which looks like it might be replaced), I am pricing it as if it has been to SOME degree cosmetically upgraded, just to be sure. Pretty hard to find ANY pre-1880s martially marked S/A at anything under $10,000-$12000, especially a relatively scarce inspector …this one is $6350! There are lots of pictures of this neat old Indian fighter, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you.
