Description:

#4679 Evans Sporting Rifle, 44Evans Long, 28” octagon barrel marked “Evans Sporting Rifle”. Excellent bright bore, about a 9+ on a scale of 10, smooth solid action with the very unique 28-shot rotary magazine fully working. The metal has a thin grey-brown patina with no appreciable pitting or flaws, the wood is near excellent with no damage decernable. Typical coarse checked forearm, as these were the last of the Evans stock remaining after the bankruptsy of the company in 1879 and the few remaining guns being assembled by creditors in 1880 with not a great deal of attention given to “quality control” when it came to the checkering. A very impressive and unique design, the Evans still holds the destinction of being the highest cartridge capacity of any American gun that does not have a detachable magazine. The straight cased 44EVANS cartridge is fairly easy to make and load (instructions can be “Googled”), so these have become one of the real “conversation pieces” at Cowboy Action shoots. This is a WELL above average specimen and well deserving of a good spot in a lever action collection. Fine+ $2395.
