Description:
Serial #915, .577 Snider, 30 1/2” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a trace amount of freckling within the grooves. This is an 1861 dated, two-band rifle that has an overall pewter-gray patina with mild freckling on the balance. The 1861 dated Enfield lockplate, 915 numbered breechblock, and “I*” designated receiver ring have a matching gray patina, and the markings are crisp and clear with some darker plum-brown mottling on the trigger guard and barrel bands. The walnut stock has an old added varnish finish over numerous handling marks and surface blemishes with the Enfield cartouche still fairly crisp on the right side of the butt, large “1866” on the left side, and a clear unit marking on the buttplate tang: “RCR/6(?)3” (Royal Canadian Reg't.). The action is fully functional and the breech locks firmly. Both an original leather sling and a new, correct pattern ramrod are included. The Snider was first issued to Canadian forces in 1867 when a shipment of 30,000 rifles arrived from Great Britain in August. The shipment consisted of 28,500 Mk. I long rifles and 1,500 Mk. I short rifles (this example being one of them). This is a very nice example of a regimentally marked Canadian two-band Snider and is in fine condition overall. {Ref. “Defending the Dominion” by David W. Edgecombe; 2003} Antique
