Description:
Serial #46675 (Reg. #465), .357 Magnum, 8 3/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This handsome revolver has all matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, extractor, yoke, and barrel (the barrel is a factory replacement and has a matching number within the shroud, as well as a small star symbol), and has retained 90-92% of the original blue finish that exhibits mild silvering at the muzzle, along the projecting edges, and has a moderate-heavy turn-ring on the rear of the cylinder. The grooved hammer and trigger have a mixed dull gray patina with some bright original color case-hardening that has brightened along the edges, and the correct but unnumbered checkered walnut grips are in excellent condition with only a handful of minor marks and only traces of flattening to the points. The action functions and times flawlessly, and the lock-up is tight. A large amount of documentation accompanies the revolver including a 2015 S&W Factory Letter that lists a ship date of September 9, 1935 to Thomas J. Godley, Chief of Police, Fitchburg, MA. Chief Godley specified a 3 1/2 lb. single-action trigger pull with 10 lb. double-action pull, and a no longer present S&W grip adapter. The letter also states that the revolver originally had a 6 1/2” barrel, but at some point the revolver was rebarreled to the longer length by the factory. Also included is a sheaf of S&W Historical Foundation documents pertaining to Chief Godley's order. This is a splendid, police used Registered Magnum, and would make a great addition to any collection. There is more research to be done on Chief Godley. He was also the President of the New England Association of Chiefs of Police. FFL or C&R
