Description:
Published very early American period American Dragoon or Cavalry sword cut down to 15 inch fighting knife with crude clipped point.  At one time in the Stan Smullen collection.  Published in the article "Sword into Knife: Second Life" by Stan Smullen in Vol.35 No.2, 2010 issue of North/South Trader magazine. The article describes the knife  as a iron mounted, lion Head, pommel sword, circa. 1790s. The blade is ectched with "American Lighthorse"  with an American Eagle & Shield with stars & rays & square design with decorative lines inside, at the ricasso. Etchings are on both sides of the blade but much clearer on the left side of the blade. The top spine of the blade is etched with Wihelm Tesche  Peters John in Solighen Fecit. German maker of the sword blade. These swords are believed to have been made in Philadelphia area for American Dragoons, Militias from around 1785 to 1800. Has the original sword blade cut down, iron lions head pommel & iron ferrule. The crossguard & kucklebow were removed along with the orignal grip which was replaced by a wood grip. The sword blade was shortened to 10" with the conversion work, sharpening & making the primitive  point. This knife is almost as old as the country itself around 225 years. It could have been used in the War of 1812, the Alamo, the Mexican American War and the Civil War by either side.  Who knows the history and who carried it. Credit select information above to whom I purchased the knife from:  Bowling Green Drummer.
