Description:
Conversion #26, .68 Caliber, 42” barrel with a good bore that has dark freckling along its length. This is one of the Model 1816 muskets rifled and altered to percussion for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Henry Leman of Philadelphia prior to the Civil War. The metal has an overall, lightly cleaned gray patina with some scattered dark freckling, heavier towards the breech, and lines of light-moderate pitting along the sides of the barrel where the metal meets the wood. The musket has a visible line at the breech and the large bolster with forward angled clean-out screw distinctive to Leman's work. The barrel, percussion breech piece, and the inside of the lock are marked with a conversion number (26), and there is a large “L” hand-struck into the bottom of the barrel as well. The walnut stock has been cleaned and lightly sanded, but still has a legible cartouche on the left side along with some faintly carved initials, all under an added military oil finish. The musket comes with an original Model 1816 “T” mortise bayonet with “US/SC” inspector marking along the flat at the ricasso (SC: Samuel Chandler, Springfield Armory). The bayonet matches the condition of the musket precisely and has a patina that is identical to the rest of the metal. A n old leather sling is fitted that is heavily flaked and crazed, but still fairly supple and intact. The original ramrod is still present and the mechanism functions flawlessly. This is a fine, state-converted musket and would make a fine addition to any collection. {Refs. “U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets And Their Bayonets – The Later Years” by Peter A.
