Description:
Serial #51150 (Reg. #2134), .357 Magnum, 8 3/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This handsome revolver has all matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, extractor, yoke, and barrel, and has retained 95-97% of the original blue finish that exhibits some mild silvering at the muzzle and on the projecting edges. There is a series of minor peen marks present on the left side of the frame just above the cylinder latch. The cylinder has a moderate turn-ring on the rear of the cylinder, while the grooved hammer and trigger have about 80-85% of the bright original color case-hardening remaining with some mild fading along the edges. The walnut grips with S&W grip adapter are original and numbered to the gun on the interior. The grips are in fine-near excellent condition with only a few minor marks and some minor flattening of the points, as well as dark verdigris on the medallions. The action functions and times flawlessly, and the lock-up is tight. A large amount of documentation accompanies the revolver including a 2015 S&W Factory Letter that lists a ship date of April 2, 1937 to Logan Gregg Hardware Co., Pittsburgh, PA. Also included is a sheaf of S&W Historical Foundation documents pertaining to the revolver and shows that the gun was ordered for a D.A. Atkinson, MD, who was the actual recipient. It seems Dr. Atkinson filled out his own S&W order sheet, requesting that the grip adapter be shipped “unattached”, and added a notation at the bottom that reads: “I have shot S&W pistols and revolvers for 40 years. Kindly send me one of your pistol questionnaire. Yours Truly, D.A. Atkinson”. With a little research it appears that Dr. Atkinson was a Zooligist from PA. This is a fantastic Registered Magnum, in excellent condition with an original S&W grip adapter, and would make a great addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
