Description:
NSN, .36 caliber percussion, 4 5/8” octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a striking and beautiful revolver that has 3/4 coverage engraving executed in an ancient Celtic motif with the metal retaining 95-97% of the original gold wash finish that has faded slightly along a few of the raised and projecting edges. The five shot cylinder has retained nearly all of its original vivid color case-hardening with just a very minor amount of silvering around the nipples. The frame screws, trigger, loading lever, and sliding cylinder lock safety retain most of their original bright nitre blue while the trigger guard retains some of the nitre bluing; the balance having flaked to a pleasant dark gray patina. The one-piece ebony grip is built to resemble a broadsword grip and has helical grooves with double-braided wire wraps terminating in a flared metal butt with large lanyard swivel. The action is tight and functions flawlessly. The next piece is a large Scottish dirk that measures 20 1/8” overall with a straight, unfullered, triangular blade measuring 14 3/4” in length having incised geometric designs running along the spine. The steel is in excellent condition; armory bright with only a handful of negligible specks of oxidation near the tip. The bronze hilt is of the classic English bollock pattern that has two large metal lobes in place of proper quillons with a short integral ferrule engraved with an intertwined Celtic cord design, a spiral shagreen grip with braided wire wrap, and a large flared disk-shaped pommel with the arms and crest of Clan MacGregor (some of the original cloisonne enamel remains but the balance has chipped and is now missing). The scabbard is engraved with intricate traditional Celtic geometric designs and has a large appliqué MacGregor crest comprising a crossed sword with crown and uprooted tree behind a small red shield. The reverse of the scabbard has a swiveling belt loop and there is a small pierced bronze ornament at the tip that is partially detached. The next item is a small sgian-dubh, measuring 7 3/8” overall with a 5” triangular, unfullered, single-edged blade that has a slight curve to the obverse side. The sgian-dubh is styled identically to the dirk but much smaller and does have a slight lateral curve (intentionally fashioned this way in order to allow the sheathed knife to ride comfortably in the top of the hose resting against the wearer's calf). The scabbard has the same geometric Celtic motif engraving with the crossed sword with crown and uprooted tree of Clan MacGregor at the throat on the reverse. The pommel, which is too small to have the full MacGregor arms, instead bears the crowned lion and battlement crest of the clan with encircling garter and “RIGHE” slogan (“Right” in Scots-Gaelic). The last item is a large circular, gold wash finished fly plaid brooch that measures 3 1/2” in diameter with an elegantly wrought braided gold wire border, central clan lionhead crest and slogan in the center. The border has 30 glass faux pearls on archaic mounts set off by a pair of inset citrine stones exhibiting a 19th century cut style. The reverse of the brooch repeats the central crest and slogan but adds relief engraved thistle vignettes and the motto: “E'rn du and spare not”, which is a slightly different interpretation of the second half of the motto purported to be inscribed on the original clan seal of Rob Roy (MacGregor): “Een dhu bait spair nocht” (“Slay and spare not”). The brooch has two hinged pins for affixing the fly plaid to the wearer's shoulder and both are still present. This is an absolutely stunning array of Celtic decorated items and would make a tremendous addition to any collection.
