Description:
Serial #118930, .36 Caliber, 7 1/2” octagon barrel with a good bore that has dark freckling at the breech-end and mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very early 1862 manufactured revolver that has all-matching numbers, including the wedge and cylinder arbor, with the metal having an overall mottled gray patina speckled with darker areas of mild freckling. Approximately 10-15% of a period added, extremely thin silver plate finish remains, most visibly on the rear portion of the frame, hammer, and especially on the underside of the barrel and protected surfaces of the loading lever. The exposed silver has even surface “bubbling” and has tarnished to a pale rose color mixing with blue-black, while the protected silver has a whitish gray color edged with pink and black. The cylinder is mostly a mottled pewter gray with some freckling at the face and mild pinprick pitting around the nipples. About 75-80% of the naval scene remains with a few shallow impact marks along the circumference as well. The brass trigger guard and gripstrap have a mostly speckled, pale yellow-ochre patina with traces of original silver remaining around the legs of the bow. The burled walnut grip is extremely handsome, and was most probably added to the revolver when it was given the silver finish. The wood is in very good plus condition with some evidence of light sanding through the years and retains a very nice oil finish throughout. The lock-up is still tight with a very small amount of barrel play, and the mechanism functions flawlessly. The revolver is accompanied by a 2002 dated Colt factory letter giving a ship date of January 20, 1862, to B. Kittredge & Co. in Cincinnati, OH. A further 2002 dated, handwritten letter to the previous owner by noted dealer Floyd Everhart is also included detailing his encounters with similarly finished, Kittredge retailed '51 Navies. It was his opinion that Kittredge silver plated them in an effort to make the guns more “flashy”, but that the extreme thinness of the silver soon caused it to flake away. His experience was that only traces of silver still remain on guns so finished, and that this example has more than any other he had seen up to that point. Antique
