Description:
Offered for your consideration is this fine Marlin Ballard Union Hill No. 9
target rifle in 38-55 caliber. The No. 9 Union Hill was made from 1884 to 1891 and was a very popular rifle in the Schuetzen matches of the late 1800s. This Ballard has the correct 30 inch half round, half octagon barrel with an excellent bore, sharp and shiny from breech to muzzle. It has a globe front sight and a Marlin Improved Graduated tang sight. The barrel retains 90%+ even blue. The receiver retains trace case colors in protected areas but has mostly faded to a nice even mottled gray. Mechanically it is tight and crisp with no evident wear. The stock and forearm are of straight grained walnut with light colored finish that is typical of that model. They are tight and soild, no cracks or chips. The checkering is sharp and free of wear or compression marks. There is a name lightly scribed behind the cheek rest, looks to be "Schinharl", a name of germanic origin and likely the name of the original owner? Herr Schinharl certainly took good and proper care of his Ballard! These rifles had a reputation for fine accuracy and time permitting I hope to try it out next week! This is a fine vintage Ballard that looks better in hand than in my photos. I'll provide any additional photos you'd like to see, just let me know the specific views you want.
