Description:
A very early hammerless gun with a unique action. The coffee grinder looking lever on the bottom pushes the bbl forward and opens it. You load the shells and put it back towards the front thus closing the action. Marked on the bbl is "Teschner & Sturm patent". It is a 20 ga although modern shells do not fit. Evidently for 20 ga brass shells. Firing system is also somewhat odd. It looks almost like percussion nipples inside but they would have to be reversed for that to work. Could be a pinfire or those holes might have an internal firing pin that comes through? I'm not quite certain how that part works? On the frame on top of the breech is an engraved crown above a shield. The stock has deep relief carving on both sides. Especially on the left side with the cheek piece. All kinds of floral swirls but the highlight is towards the butt there is a scene of 5 dogs fighting. Don't know what the artist was trying to tell us but it certainly is different. Overall gun is in good condition for it's age. This is a very old gun with grey antique patina on the bbls. The frame is a grey/brown. Wood is very dark from oil staining and most likely was a dark rich color to start with. Behind the trigger guard is the bone extension which was popular in Europe. We get some unique and cool items in here at Merz Antiques and this one would be in the strange and unique category!
