Description:
This early cartridge shotgun manufactured in the mid-1870s was sold by George Knaak, a high-end gun shop on Friedrichstrasse in Berlin. Friedrichstrasse was at this time central Berlin’s traditional shopping street and a major culture center located three blocks from the historic heart of the old government quarter. This location is partial testimony to the gun’s high quality, as only the best firearms would have been sold here at the height of Prussian prestige and power. The quality is also evident in the gold inlay on the barrels and side plates, deep engraving, and beautiful Bernard steel barrels.
The 30-1/2” barrels are choked Skeet (.004) and Modified (.018). The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 038/.035/.033 and at the middle of the barrel is .038/.040/.033; the left barrel is .041/.037/.032 and .040/.039/.033, respectively. Bores 9” from the breach are .668 and .672 respectively. Chambers are 2-1/2”. The lettering and engraving on the top of the barrels is crisp and the bores are bright. The gun locks up tight and on face. This shotgun weighs 6 lb 8 oz. The drop at the comb is 1-3/4” and at the heel 2-3/4”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the stock is 14.” This antique gun is fully functional and shoots well. To better preserve this piece of history for many decades more of use, the stock has been reconditioned and the barrels refinished.
Inspection period is 7 days from receipt by buyer. Seller has fired this shotgun using 2-1/2” shells made for use in Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially for a gun such as this that is 140 years old, the seller recommends that new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. This gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which the seller will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.
