Early style Model 1795 mounts with 1st Model Virginia Manufactory type overly large trigger guard. 100% original Confederate drum conversion of the type illustrated and discussed in John Murphy’s “CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETS”, pages 454-5, plate 3(top) and pages 732-3, plate 10. These are quite distinctive using a drum with beveled outer edge and a variety of gunsmith made hammers usually with flat shanks and without knurling on the face of the ear. No visible lock marking. This type of conversion is believed to have been done in what is today West Virginia early in the Civil War. There are archival records of this type being made in or near Lewisburg and a marked example, very similar by a Harper’s Ferry gunsmith. Opinions vary and there may have been more than one gunsmith doing this type alteration. Beautiful untouched condition with lovely dark patina on both metal and stock. 100% original in every respect and with the original handmade Confederate ramrod. SOLD Antique: Yes |
