Description:
A very scarce Webley & Scott designed and modified flare pistol. This is a No 4 Mk I SN 59373. This RAF pistol was mounted on a bracket with a solenoid switch that allowed the pistol to be fired remotely. Attached to the unit is a plate which held the trigger release. The pistol and has a spring mounted bar on both sides of the hammer that controls the hammer fall. Part of the plate holds the trigger and sear in the fire position. The trigger guard and top bar are constructed in brass. The electrical plug is marked with the crown and AM for Air Ministry. It is out understanding that these units were mounted on many models of aircraft operated by the RAF. On multi crew large aircraft such as the Lancasters and Halifaxs. The crew could manually operate them through the special mounts of an aircraft fuselage. The units such as the one as offered were mounted on smaller aircraft such as the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Mosquito. See photos of one of these units on page 25 May 1968 issue of "The Gun Report" by Andrew F. Lustyik. A relatively scarce flare launching device especially when you consider the huge loss of aircraft and the post war destruction of the majority of the survivors.
