Description:
SOLD...Antique Second model 1876 Winchester. Here is a nice second model 1876 Winchester. S/N 16118 and made in 1881. It is in the very desireable 45-60 caliber. This is the best shooting caliber in my opinion as the .45 calibers always seem to shoot much better than the 40-60 does. This gun is out of my personal collection.  Has the standard 28" round barrel. The bore is very good for a second model 76. The rifling is good all the way through with NO rings or bulges. Shows just  normal very light roughness and frosting. NO big pits or craters. I think an above average bore for an 1876. Most are all shot out and pitted bad. This gun shoots great. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. NO bulges cases or backed out primers. ALL the springs are strong and very positive. It has that special "sound" that the 76 should have when you run the action. One of the tightest 76 I have ever owned. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive.. The metal is a smooth dark gray patina with NO pitting.  ALL the markings are excellent as you can see in the photos. Still retains the original dust cover that is a little loose as most all are but still retracts with the lever throw. The front sight is a period of use "rocky mountain"  and absolutely could be original to the gun. If it is not, then it definately was put on during the period of use. The rear sight is the standard Winchester buckhorn style with the correct elevator. The wood is very nice also. The forearm still fits very nice to the metal and is proud and looks like never sanded on. Looks like at one time it had 6 tacks on each side of the forearm that have long been removed. You can still see the tiny holes and the circle pattern of the tacks in the photos hopfully. You can enlarge the photos and I am sure you can make them out. Does not detract that much and could probably be lightly sanded to remove but I will not mess with it. Possibly one small and tight grain crack  on the left side behind the forearm cap as you can see but at a closer look it could be just a scratch. Again it does not detract and just shows honest use that these 76's will show. The butt stock is very nice. NO spits or cracks anywhere. Still fits tight to the metal and is still proud to the metal in some areas. The wood is acually pretty darn nice for a 76 and is not all beat up and oil soaked and just shows some honest use dings and scratches. The screw heads are even very nice and sharp except for the main spring tension screw that is a little burred up. All in all, this is a very nice early second model 76 that show NO abuse and just honest use that has been well cared for all these years. I have owned this one for quite some time and it is now time for someone else to shoot and enjoy it. Please know what you are doing in the loading and firing of these 76's. I can not be responcible for improper use or firing of any of these antique firearms.. I have always used black powder or American Pioneer substitute as the cases for this caliber are quite large and even light smokeless loads in these large cases could be very dangerous. Here it is at a very reasonable price. Shop around and then call me fast !!! This gun will be shipped in a hard case for protection as these are very large and heavy guns. $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. You will like this ole 76 !!!!
