Description:
Serial #A5124, 7mm Mauser, 29” barrel with a good bore that has some dark freckling and pitting within the grooves. This is an extremely interesting rifle that has no national crest on the receiver and retains 80-85% of the original blue finish that is blending smoothly with a mellow plum-brown patina along the barrel and some mild silvering at the muzzle. The correct, mismatched bolt has a mottled gray patina with speckled areas of surface freckling and brighter wear along the bearing surfaces. The correct metal cleaning rod is numbered almost identically, but the last two digits are transposed (A5142). The walnut stock and handguard have numerous minor handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about old added oil finish. Characteristically for a Boer-owned rifle, the owner's name is carved into the right side of the buttstock: “P.S. NORTJEE. JZ”. We have not yet found a record for any POWs with those initials and last name, however it is interesting to note that several women and children sharing that name are listed as having been relocated to British concentration camps. These are excellent, collectable military Mausers in their own right, but finding one with Boer carvings is highly unusual. This example is in very good condition overall and would make a great addition to any collection. {Ref. “Carvings from the Veldt” Parts 1 and 2 by David C. George; 2004 & 2008} Antique
