This 1924 dated, “ENFIELD” and “ENGLAND” marked rifle retains 85-90% of the original blue finish with the balance turned to a mellow plum-brown patina along some of the exposed edges and high points, and silvering along the balance. The matching numbered bolt with No. 4 style cocking-piece has a commensurate amount of original blue still present with silvering along the handle, bearing surfaces, and along the body. Birmingham civilian proofs are present on the receiver ring and knox form. The original flip-up aperture rear sight is in fine shape (although the latch spring is missing), the distinctive Mk. V safety is present, as is the correct, solid faced magazine cut-off. The forend, handguards, and buttstock have been arsenal refinished to fine condition with a nice added varnish and scattered small handling marks. A single unnumbered magazine is included which has a commensurate amount of the original blue remaining and an original canvassling is fitted. The SMLE Mk. V is a fascinating model, almost a link between the No. 1 and No. 4 series rifles, with about 20,000 manufactured between 1922 and 1924. While not a general issue rifle, the Mk. V saw limited use and many were subsequently sent to Greece and Ireland where they did see service. This desirable example is in very good plus – fine condition overall and would make a great addition to a collection. {Ref. “The Lee-Enfield A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines” by Ian Skennerton, 2007} FFL or C&R SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: Enfield Model: SMLE Serial Number: A1800 Caliber Info: .303 Gauge Info: .303 |
