Description:
A collectable early (1912) Double rifle sidelock drilling in the powerful modern calibre of 9.3mm x74 over 16-gauge History:- According to research with the German Gun Collectors Society, this gun was made almost certainly around 1912 by the maker Wilhelm Recknagel and is stamped with the makers initials WR on the action. The serial number of 212, stamped on all metal parts, probably denotes February 1912. The proof marks indicate the gun was made in Suhl, Germany, a well know centre of gun-making activity. The gun was presented to the late owner as a gift by a business associate in the late 1950’s, at which time it was already known to be “old”. Before presentation it was comprehensively refurbished, including the re-bluing of the barrels. It is known that the late owner gave up hunting in 1983 and so the gun has not been used for 32 years, although it has been test fired. It is now offered for sale by the owner’s family as part of his estate. The barrels:- The barrels are 26” in length and carry a number of identification marks which have been examined photographically by the German Gun Collectors Society. They are stamped both with the logo and in print with the Krupps mark for Krupps Steel. The single 16 gauge shotgun barrel carries the “nitro” mark and is clean and bright with some pitting but no signs of any corrosion. Examination confirms that lapping of the shotgun barrel can remove the pitting. The two rifle barrels are stamped St.m.G over 18 grams, denoting the calibre at 9.3mm x 74. Both are clean, displaying no corrosion and with well-defined rifling. The 11mm flat rib is finely matt finished. Cartridge extraction is via a single monoblock. All barrels carry the “crown over U” mark and the rifle barrels are stamped with the bore base diameter mark of 8.9mm over 75 on the under flats. The non-adjustable Quick release scope mounts are via a front fixed latch mount with a spring loaded slider latch at the rear. Unfortunately, the original scope was lost some time ago. The fixed rear sight has a flip up secondary just in front, with the front sight being a fixed blade style. The condition of the bluing is excellent and virtually unmarked. This tends to indicate that the gun was actually not used much after its presentation and refurbishment. There is some slight pitting present on the barrels, which was clearly there before the re-bluing. The action:- The sidelock action is fully engraved, consisting of deer, birds, rabbit, scroll, flower and woodland scenes. The safety for the rifle barrels is of the “Greener” style, mounted on the left sideplate. The safety for the shotgun barrel is a conventional slider, mounted just behind the top lever and with a push button release to avoid accidental selection. To the left of the top lever is the “barrel cocked” pop-up indicator for the shotgun barrel. There are no “cocked” indicators for the rifle barrels. Triple locking is via two substantial latches in the floor of the action with “Greener” style sliding top bolt. Once closed, the barrels and action exhibit no play and lock up solidly. The forward facing surfaces of the action are stamped “WR” as indicated above and are the initials of the maker. The top left of the action is stamped with the serial number 212 and the right side is stamped with the “crown over U” The double triggers are adjustable for weighting and most of the original bluing is present on the trigger guard. Overall, the action is in extremely good condition, displaying only the kind of wear one would expect of a working gun of this vintage (103 years old) and one that has been used, rather than locked up in a cabinet all its life and brought out only on special occasions. The stock and forend:- Both the stock and forend are made from a modestly figured piece of walnut finished with a laquer. This is probably a result of it being ordered as a more practical hunting weapon, rather than spending more money on a select piece of more expensive walnut. The stock is of full pistol-grip design, with fine and still sharp hand chequering and a roll over cheek piece. The butt has been extended at some time in its life with an extra piece of matching wood, increasing the length by about 1cm and finished with a butt plate. Length of pull is 14.5”, measured from front trigger. The semi-beavertail forend is of matching wood, also with clearly defined hand chequering. The metalwork of the release is also engraved and stamped with the guns serial number 212. Overall the stock is in good condition, if not exceptional by way of the quality of the wood. This could be substantially improved by stripping, texturing/tinting and finishing with a London oiled finish and would lift the appearance significantly, giving the impression of a much more expensive piece of wood than the original. However, this is very much a matter of opinion and emotion with some collectors, who may prefer everything to remain as original as possible. Ownership:- This gun is part of the estate of the late owner and is in the family’s ownership. It is currently in the UK, but arrangements can be made for it to be shipped to any other part of the world. Gun weight:- The gun weighs 8lbs 3oz All contact regarding the sale is via the contact numbers and e-mail address in France, from where the sale is being conducted. The price:- The price includes the cost of shipping, appropriate documentation and insurance to a convenient airport on mainland USA or Europe where the buyer will be responsible for collection and any customs charges for clearance. For Europe, a door to door delivery can be arranged.
