Description:
NSN, .577/.450 Martini, 33” barrel with a very good bore that has some dark freckling within the grooves. This is an 1887 dated, “VR” cyphered, Enfield-made rifle that has an overall dark patina blending with the arsenal re-applied blue finish on the metal. There is some silvering at the muzzle with some further mild gray fading along the exposed edges and surfaces. There are extensive British military proofs on the breech with further Nepali markings on the trigger guard. Deeply struck “FA” sale from service markings are present on both the knox form and on the left side of the receiver (Firozpur Arsenal, Punjab). The walnut forend and buttstock are also in very good condition with an armory re-applied military oil finish over numerous small handling marks and blemishes, a repair at the toe of the butt, and a few small chips missing from around the buttplate tang. The right side of the butt has extensive British and Nepali markings along with fairly crisp cartouches. The rifle is very good mechanically, and still has the original ramrod. Additionally, the rifle comes with a correct bayonet measuring 23 5/8” overall with an 18 1/8” straight, single-edged, unfullered blade having shallow false edges at the tip. The steel on the hilt has an overall mottled gray patina with spots of gray along the edges and dark brown freckling along the sides of the blade. The crossguard has inscribed Nepali markings and the original scabbard is also included. This is a pre-IMA purchase, British made, Nepalese “Long Tang” Martini that is complete and in very good plus condition overall. {Ref. “Guns of the Gurkhas” by John Walter; 2005} Antique
