Description:
#4516, John Rigby & Co. 43 Sackville St. London W: A John Rigby Single Square Bridge Mauser Intermediate Action in 275 Rigby built in 1917 for J. J. Crewdson with a 24" barrel with a band island rear sight with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights, Factory Rigby cocking piece peep sight and so marked, Front ramp, Barrel band sling eye, Waffenfabrik Mauser-Oberndorf Commercial action that carries the Mauser #57693, The action was built in 1912; The receiver, magazine box & stock all have matching Mauser serial numbers, The stock and action also has the correct Rigby serial numbers and the Mauser numbers, The barrel has nitro proof in London & Germany, Non-hinged floorplate, Original quick detachable single lever Rigby scope mount with the original Aldis Brothers-Birmingham scope dated 1916, This scope has the Rigby gun number and address engraved on the tube, Then a 1.25 4x20 Schmidt & Bender was added without any alteration to the original & existing Rigby bases, It has a pure classic Rigby pre-war stock, Point pattern checkering, 14 7/16" L.O.P. over a steel buttplate; 7 lbs. 6 oz. without the scope, 8 lbs. 10 oz. with the original Rigby scope and 8 lbs. 15 oz. with the new S&B scope, The blue remains at 90-92% and I am sure it is the original blue, If it was reblacked it was done many years ago, The stock finish remains at 90%, The checkering is at 90%, The bore is excellent to near excellent plus, Most of these 7x57's had the hell shot out of them but this one has lived a guarded and sheltered life, The whole is cased in a brass cornered full length leather case with the proper trade labels and a lot of accessories. I believe this to be an original case to the gun with some original accessories and some modern accessories. I have seen my fair share of the classic Rigby 275's but I don't know if I have seen one better than and as complete as this piece. It is a proven commodity in Africa with Leopard, Eland and Gemsbok and has excellent accuracy with both 140 & 160 grain bullets. //////////////////////////////////// This is all Commercial Mauser with an Intermediate Single Square Bridge action and then the British made a great open sighted game rifle to compliment this great piece of bolt rifle machinery. The Mauser Sporting Rifle and actions number about 127,000 and more than 82,000 were sold prior to WWI with a large percentage going to the British Gun Trade. From 1898 to 1912 Rigby held the exclusive British distributorship for Mauser sporting rifles, actions and barreled actions. ///////////////////////////////////// Rigby was at 72 St. James's St from 1866 to 1907 and then at 43 Sackville St. (The Address of This Gun) from 1908 to 1955 and then on to 32 King Street, St James's. In 1963 the shop moved to 28 Sackville Street and in 1969 to 13 Pall Mall. In 1984 J Roberts & Son (Gunmakers) Ltd bought the company and in 1985 moved it to their premises at 5 King Street, Covent Garden. In 1987 the factory and shop moved to 66-68 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark. In 1997 the goodwill and rights to the Rigby name were bought by Rogue River Rifle Works and a new company, John Rigby & Co Inc. was formed at 1317 Spring Street, Paso Robles, California. On about March 1, 2013 John Rigby & Co. was acquired by Blaser of Germany. All connections with the unbelievable and indescribable mess in California have been severed, and the Rigby Company is back in London and run by Marc Newton and Patricia Pugh. I wish them well and hopefully Rigby can again make its mark as one of the leading sporting gun makers ever to practice the art of gunmaking. Long live the King!
