#16719, Jno. Rigby & Co., 72 St. James's Street, London: A Rigby Back Action Rebounding Hammer Underlever 450 3 1/4" Nitro Express Double Rifle Made Originally as a Nitro and so lettered by Paul Roberts, Made in 1900 for a Mr. William Cooper, 28" Extractor Dovetail Lump barrels with rib extension dolls head, The barrels are marked "For Special Cordite Cartridges & Bullet 480 Grains", In addition to the original proof it has modern Birmingham proof at 17 tons, 1 standing & 1 folding rear sights, Rebounding locks, Steel grip cap, Sling eyes, 14 1/2" LOP over a 1" removable leather pad, 10 lbs. 12 oz., Border engraving, Excellent wood with very nice color & contrast, The wood is stout both in the butt and forend, I presume when the gun was proved in Birmingham that it was completely refinished from stem to stern including re-color hardening, It is lettered from Paul Roberts in 2000 in London and states that it was inspected at that time and "The rifle is in good working order and appears to be in excellent condition.", The strong point and big plus to this gun is the excellent bores with square rifling the entire way. The piece is cased in a Deluxe oak & leather French fit trunk by Mr. Marvin Huey. The gun is an accurate piece with Reloader 15 and will shoot a 350 grain Hawk bullet into the same point of impact as a 480 grain bullet. Mr. William Cooper in 1900 was set back 38 Guineas for the gun and 3 pounds 10 schillings for a leather trunk. I am sure Mr. Cooper was sold on the new .450 Bore "Special" for Big Game. ///////////////////////////////////// Rigby was at 72 St. James's St (The Address of This Gun) from 1866 to 1907 and then at 43 Sackville St. from 1908 to 1955 and then on to 32 King Street, St James's. In 1963 the shop moved to 28 Sackville Street and in 1969 to 13 Pall Mall. In 1984 J Roberts & Son (Gunmakers) Ltd bought the company and in 1985 moved it to their premises at 5 King Street, Covent Garden. In 1987 the factory and shop moved to 66-68 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark. In 1997 the goodwill and rights to the Rigby name were bought by Rogue River Rifle Works and a new company, John Rigby & Co Inc. was formed at 1317 Spring Street, Paso Robles, California. On about March 1, 2013 John Rigby & Co. was acquired by Blaser of Germany. All connections with the unbelievable and indescribable mess in California have been severed, and the Rigby Company is back in London and run by Marc Newton and Patricia Pugh. I wish them well and hopefully Rigby can again make its mark as one of the leading sporting gun makers ever to practice the art of gunmaking. Long live the King! Check them out at johnrigbyandco
