The 2nd model Merrill carbine being made without a patchbox, and the breech lever is secured by a rounded, button-type latch. Fine, untouched condition, serial #14865, all matching. The bore is clean and bright, excellent rifling. All metal in the original untouched bright finish. Tight mechanics. The lock is dated 1863, with crisp American eagle and full lockplate markings "J. H. MERRILL BALTO./PAT. JULY 1858./APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61", top line a bit thin. The top of breech marked "J H. MERRILL BALTO./PAT. JULY 1858.", top line a bit thin. 2nd model copper-faced breech plunger. The original walnut stock is in excellent condition overall with sharp edges. Clear inspectors cartouche on left side on stock. Fine untouched brass barrel band, brass buttplate stamped "U.S." and brass triggerguard, all stamped " 4/61". Complete with original sling bar and ring, and rear sight, both stamped "4/61". Merrill carbines were known to be issued to the following U.S. cavalry regiments: NY 1st, 5th, 18th; PA 11th, 17th, 18th; NJ 1st; IN 7th, WI 1st, 3rd; KY 27th; DE 1st. This is an exceptional 2nd model Merrill carbine, it would be difficult to find one better. This gun is fresh to the market after being in a 35+ year collection. SOLD Antique: Yes |
