Description:
NSN, .73 Caliber (approx. 12 Bore), 36” barrel with a good bore that has dark freckling along its length. This is a very nice gun that has a smooth, striped gray and brown patina along the barrel with some mild silvering along the edges of the breech facets and on the “wedding band” transition to round. The breech has both an inlaid platinum band along the top of the engraved breech and matching platinum blow-out on the bolster. Blanch's Gracechurch St. address is present on the top flat, and his name is present on the lockplate: “J. Blanch”. The lockplate has light scrollwork engraving with game birds at the rear, and the hammer is not engraved with an artificial patina added. The hammer may be a recent replacement, but has visible buffing marks, and is probably the original hammer that was cleaned and aged at some point. The mechanism is fully functional with loud, positive clicks at the sear notches. The walnut stock has been lightly sanded with an additional varnish finish applied over minor nicks and small handling blemishes scattered throughout. The trigger guard has a typical pineapple finial with light engraving, and the elongated buttplate tang is slightly proud of the wood at the tip. The brass-tipped ramrod is original and held in place by two plain thimbles. The bright metal forend tip, oval wedge escutcheons, and blank octagonal wrist plate are in fine shape. The gun is housed in a fairly new compartmented wooden case with new green baize-lined interior and facsimile John Blanch interior label. This is a handsome and mechanically excellent British fowler that would make a great decorative accent piece or addition to any collection of British sporting guns. Antique
