#4610 Winchester 1866-SRC (AKA, “The Yellow Boy”) 44RF with a pretty decent bore, having strong decent rifling with the usual black powder darkness in the grooves. VG action, but is missing the bolt face with the dual RF firing pins. Serial numbered in the 153XXX range (1883 mfgr), this also being a serial range where there were a LOT of excess carbine frames that were used to make rifles, but this one remained a carbine. Condition-wise, for a saddle carbine it is slightly above the average condition with great brass and an even crusty brown patina on the metal. The exception is that like most carbines, the buttstock (while being an original ’66 stock) is almost certain to have been replaced somewhere in the many years of its life, since the butt plate serial number does not match and there is a VERY well done plugged sling swivel mortise on the belly. A mis-matched stock like this was usually due to some cowboys horse tripping in a prairie dog burrow and then rolling over on the rifle or carbine, breaking the butt stock. The barrel address is typically worn from long scabbard use, but is still dimly visible. The forearm has some light slivers, dings, and chipping at the frame ….and the buttstock has some bumps and bruises at the rear sides. Correct “butterfly” lever latch and magazine plug. It’s getting very, VERY difficult to find ANY decent ‘66 carbine at anything under $4500-5000 these days, and this is a pretty decent little saddle gun at $3795.
