Description:
NSN, .75 caliber, 39 1/4” barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This pattern was the last smoothbore musket adopted by Britain and the first to be outfitted exclusively with the then-new percussion lock. The metal of the triple wedge-fastened barrel has an overall arsenal brown finish that has paled slightly in spots along the barrel and at the muzzle. The extensive British markings at the breech of the barrel are crisp and well defined, while the lock has clear “(crown)/VR/TOWER 1847” markings ahead of the hammer. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes with still visible markings on the right side of the butt, as well as some small armory repairs at the wrist and at the front of the shallow comb. The brass furniture has tarnished to a dull ochre-yellow with large unit markings present on the buttplate tang: “50/B/15”. The musket comes complete with its original metal ramrod and also has an original socket bayonet which is in very good condition, lightly freckled and having a mottled gray patina that is darker within the flutes of the 17” angular blade. The bayonet is affixed by a spring catch at the nosecap that locks into a raised ring at the base of the socket. The mechanism is semi-functional, but the sear catch is worn and will not hold the hammer at full-cock. This is a neat, unit marked musket and would make a fabulous addition to any collection.
