Description:
#4901 Colt 1851 Navy, 4th Variation but having all mixed serial numbers and almost certain to be a “frontier rebuild” by someone in need of a reliable (and inexpensive) weapon in either the Civil War or the Post-Civil War era. Sort of reminds me of the actor Eli Wallach in the movie, “The Good, Bad, and The Ugly”, where Tuco (Eli Wallach) goes in to a frontier gunstore and doesn’t like the guns offered to him, so he takes several Colt Navies apart and chooses each piece and slaps together a good working gun. Not to say this is any great “target class shooter”, but it does have a certain “charisma” of the Old West, and is a very inexpensive entry level Colt Navy. It does show some modern added workmanship, such as the grips and the rammer lever are too good to be 150 years old. Mechanically, the bore is “so-so”, about a 6 on a scale of 10 with decent rifling, but one patch of significant rust which looks like it will clean a lot better. Action seems to be working fine, but with some common slight looseness on the arbor pin, an easy repair by knurling or peening the tip of the arbor pin, if so desired. The exterior has some light scattered pitting, good markings, an even brownish-grey patina …and does have some vise jaw marks on the barrel and a couple of missing screws on the grip straps (see photos). Certainly not an advanced collectors weapon, but quite reasonably priced for a real Civil War veteran. About “Good” as described. $895
