Description:
For sale is a Marshal Marked, three screw, Colt 1860 Army, ser# 68099. The serial number indicates a mfg date of 1862, a Civil War gun.

The blue is all gone leaving it pretty much in a dark white appearance with no surface rust. All the numbers match except the last four on the wedge, #4476. I believe all other components to be original to the gun, including the "M" marked grips. Left frame is marked COLTS PATENT in two lines. In the brass behind the trigger guard.   In the curve to the front grip strap, is marked with what appears to be a letter "C". The right side of the barrel at the extreme rear, behind and slightlty above the wedge is stamped with a letter "K". It's almost imposible to discern without a loop, or something stronger. The grips are very nice with no dents or gouges. The bottom of the right grip is plainly marked with the letter "M". I don't know what's under the grips as they fit too tightly to risk attempting to remove. At the rear of the cylinder, on the rebated area between the cylinder stops, is a horrizontally placed "K". That is, a "K" lying down. I understand that to be a proof mark, not an inspector's stamp. There is another "K" placed similarly at the right rear side of the barrel, as mentioned above. At the rear edge of the non- rebated part of the cylinder, opposite of, and inline with, the horrizontal "K" is an upright "P" inspector's stamp. The battle scene on the cylinder is discernable. The patent number and last four of the serial number, 8099, are clearly marked.

The clylinder locks and lead-ins are not excessively worn. The cylinder locks up tight and lines up perfectly. Inside the frame, beside the stock cut out in the right recoil shield, is a stamped letter "P". The bottom of the grip is cut for a stock. The bottom of the barrel, just ahead of the recess for the rammer cogs, is marked with a letter "S". The contour of the metal makes the stamping hard to discern. On the top of the back strap, under the hammer, is a stamping that I can't make out, even under a microscope. In the curve behind the trigger guard is another stamping that I can't make out. The address line is a New York address. The length from the start of one hyphen to the end of the other is 3.96 inches, as best I can measure.

The bore is not perfect but, the rifling is still very apparent from one end of the barrel to the other. At some point in the life of this revolver the screw in the loading lever was probably replaced, and the head filed smooth. It would be easy to remove and replace it with a new one as they are readily available. As is, it functions fine. Not to be melowdramatic about this but, I wonder about the possibility it could have been a war-time field expedient repair. I'm not saying that it is, but, I don't know that it isn't either so, I leave it as it is.

There it is. I've tried to be thorough with my description. Being over 150 years old, I have to sell it as is with no guarantees. Although I have fired this revolver, I'm not selling it, or recommending it, as a shooter. I think it is a good, representative piece of Civil War history. It shot and functioned very well, by the way. Trigger is pretty light. Never had a misfire. I used 25gr of 3F and #11 caps, which were a little loose on the nipples. I'm asking $1650.00. Free shipping and insurance to your door.

There's a three day inspection period, no shooting. Keep it and shipping and insurance are free. Return it with no questions asked, and buyer pays shipping and insurance both ways, plus the $12.00 listing fee.  However, this only affects those with buyer's remorse.
