This pattern was produced for issue to elements of the Royal Marines and has wide, three-groove rifling added with a Pattern 1851 rear sight in place of the original simple notch. The metal of the triple wedge-fastened barrel has an overall arsenal brown finish that has paled slightly in spots along the barrel and at the muzzle, and also exhibits some minor pinprick pitting in a few spots. The extensive British markings at the breech of the barrel are crisp and well defined, while the lock has clear “(crown)/VR” behind the hammer, and “1855/TOWER” markings ahead of the hammer. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes with still visible “B^O” 1st Class Reserve markings on the right side of the butt, as well as a fairly thick added varnish finish that has flaked lightly in a few spots. The brass furniture has tarnished to a dull ochre-yellow and there is no unit marking on the buttplate tang. The musket comes complete with its original metal ramrod and also has an original whitewashed leather sling installed that has about 85-90% of the paint remaining. The mechanism is crisp and fully functional. This is a very desirable 1842 variant that is in fine condition and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
