With flak being one of the most dangerous parts of a mission, protection for the airman's head became a priority with the AAF. In the first year of the war airmen often wore the standard US M-1 helmet, but these helmets were ill-suited for use over headsets, which were critical to bomber crews. The M-3 was designed to address this problem by having large hinged flaps on the sides to allow for the headset. Also, instead of the separate liner used on M-1 helmets, the M-3 featured a built-in suspension system. The helmet also had a flock coating to prevent the airman's hands from sticking to the metal at high altitudes. Approximately 210,000 of these helmets were made in 1942-44 by McCord Radiator and Manufacturing Company of Detroit, Mich. This helmet is in unused condition, missing only the pads (which is very common) which were glued to inside of the flaps to prevent them from banging against the earphones.
