Fine smooth action and serialized in the #51XXX range which dates this rifle to 1886. Being the lowest production of the antique lever action Winchesters, this impressive large rifle is well above the average from what is usually seen in this price range and has some thin plumming blue mixed with smooth brown patina on the barrel; the frame has more blue color although I do suspect that it has been fogged in with Cold Blue to enhance what original blue that it may have had. Also, on close inspection it looks to have had the barrel draw filed, probably to remove areas of pitting. The edges are now all sharp, no pitting, but the markings on the barrel are weak, although still mostly visible. It has near excellent wood with no appreciable damage, except for a couple of minor scratches, and has the five piece cleaning rod set in the butt trap. Shooting-wise, the 40/60 caliber is a very comfortable round with good ballistics, and cases (or loaded rounds) are available through several on-line reloaders. This nice rifle has the standard buckhorn rear barrel sight and pinched blade front sight, standard trigger and crescent buttplate. Overall it is a very handsome and always impressive rifle with a fine bore and it will be pretty tough to find a better one at anywhere near this price. About VG+. $3150 SOLD Antique: Yes |
