Tolley 20 Bore SxS Shotgun HAMMER GUN, FINE DAMASCUS, 1901 LONDON General Specs: J & W Tolley, London, Year 1901, 20 Gauge, 4lbs 12oz, Side by Side Serial Number: 7918 J. & W. Tolley is an English gunmaker of some notoriety, mostly noted for large bore waterfowlers. From about 1894 through 1903 they occupied a London address on New Bond St. where this gun, sn7918 built in 1901, was born. The earliest of the Tolley guns were not of the quality that they became in 1894 with their appointment as gunmakers to the King of Portugal and to the Persian Royal family. These are not casual appointments, and the quality can be seen in their guns from the London address after 1894. A careful review of the photographs will delight the knowledgeable and novice alike. The engraving on this gun is what made the Brits famous, with finely cut scroll covering 75% of its frame, beautiful screws and borders. The wood is still perfectly fit to the lockplates, frame, and top and bottom tang, the checkering still sharp, clear, and perfectly cut, culminating in the original horn butt plate, all with good shootable dimensions. The 28" damascus barrels show 97% fine damascus pattern, with tight ribs, dolls head extension, and very good bores. Weighing just 4 3/4lbs. and balanced perfectly 1/8" ahead of the hinge pin, this gun is a delight to carry and shoulder. AND, IMPORTANTLY, the gun was proofed after 1989 for 2 3/4" shells with 7/8oz. modern loads. The proof marks identify the actual existing specifications on the barrels, specifically the bore diameters and chamber lengths, so the gun is in proper proof. That said, it makes sense to care for this gun by shooting shells from rstshells or a like maker as they are modern payloads and velocities at lower pressures. These older guns deserve special care, after all. Carrying a small bore hammer gun afield or on a clays course is an experience that will put a smile on a gunner's face, and this one is a nice example of a 115 year old gun that is beautifully made, in incredible condition, and up to the task it's makers intended. Don't let this one get by you. Thanks for looking!
