History: Model 1852 “Slanting Breech” Carbine. Made by Robbins & Lawrence, Windsor, Vermont, for Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., Hartford, Connecticut, c. 1853 to 1855 Total quantity approximately 5,000. 52 caliber percussion breechloader with Sharps patent pellet primer mounted in the lockplate. 21-1/2” barrel. Brass buttplate, patchbox and barrel band. Blued finish with casehardened frame, breechblock, lock, lever and trigger plate. Walnut stocks with patchbox in butt. Serial numbered within the range of approximately 2050 to 7500. Barrels usually marked: SHARPS/RIFLE/MANUFG. CO. /HARTFORD, CONN. on the tang: C. SHARPS’/PATENT/1848 and the serial number; on the lockplate: C. SHARPS’/PATENT/1852. This was the earliest Sharps having the distinctive relief contoured “slanting breech” on the frame. A key feature pinpointing the Model 1852 is the retaining spring on right rear section of the forend, serving to secure the lever hinge pin. Also standard was the sling ring slide bar extending from left side of the breech barrel band.
