Description:
Marked N.Haven,1851, marked on the back of the lock, marked “E. Whitney” on the middle of the lock. 54 caliber, 33” round barrel bore has been bored

out to smooth bore, proof markings on barrel “J.H.VP”. Stock has an original ring lug for bayonet. The rifle had a browned barrel, case-hardened lock

and hammer and brass furniture with the distinctive large brass patchbox with place for spare nipple. The barrel was tin plated at some point, almost

all the tin has worn off except around the muzzle, this had the effect of preserving the metal. Metal is very clean with no corrosion on lock and

almost none on barrel. The stock is oil-finished walnut. The M1841 Rifle is often referred to as the “Mississippi Rifle” for its use by the 1st

Mississippi Regiment led by Jefferson Davis at the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War. The M1841 was continually modified and saw extensive

service in both service with both Federal and Confederate forces during the first years of the Civil War.

CONDITION: Very Good/Good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina finish overall with some light pitting on nipple and bloster and bbl. Next to bolster.

The case-hardened hammer and lockplate have aged to a dark patina. All markings on the lock are clear. The brass furniture is in fine condition and

free from nicks or scratches. The stock shows normal wear and looks very attractive. The action is crisp and tight. A solid example of a dated M1841

Rifle.
